Celebrating a quarter century in 2005!

2005 is a big year for Walton Church Cricket Club; it's our 25th anniversary. As usual we have a full fixture schedule for the season. We hope to make this a season to remember and there will be some special events to help us celebrate.

Some recent match results:-

Tuesday 17th May
P & O 125 for 4 (Silas Bingley 2 wickets) beat Walton Church 110 for 5 (Geoff Bingley 37, Andrew Brown 25) by 15 runs.
Thursday 26th May
Match cancelled as Suffolk Coastal was unable to raise a team
Tuesday 31st May
P & O 135 for 2 beat Walton Church 93 for 6 (Ian Brown 22) by 42 runs.
Tues 7th June
It might have taken until August to win a match in 2004, but in June 2005...
Walton Church 115 for 4 (Geoff Bingley 56, Brian Nichols 20, Ralph Fawkes 16*) BEAT P & O 108 for 3 by 7 runs, thanks to some tight bowling by Ralph Fawkes & Gary Hawkes in the final overs, and some tigerish fielding by everyone.
Thur 16th June
We're on a roll!
Corinthians 99 for 8 (Mel Whitesides 3 wickets, Silas Bingley 2) lost to Walton Church 103 for 2 (Geoff Bingley 55no, Ian Brown 25no) by 8 wickets.
Walton opened in the field and enjoyed a remarkable Ian Brown catch early on, setting the trend for some excellent fielding. The win was secured with 5 consecutive 4's from an in form Geoff Bingley.

Special thanks to Ken Dunn who kindly volunteered to be an umpire for the match!

Thur 23rd June & the winning run continues...!!!

Fred Olsen 84 for 7 (Silas Bingley & Steve Rowe 2 wickets each) lost to Walton Church 85 for 5 (Gary Hawkes 25, Ralph Fawkes 14no) by 5 wickets with 3 balls remaining!

Thanks again to Ken 'Dickie' Dunn for umpiring!

Thur 30th June
The match between Walton Church & the Captain's Invitation XI was rained off.
Thur 7th July
Once again, the Walton Church v Captains Invitation XI match (Corinthians pulled out - anything to do with our winning streak?!) was rained off.
Tues 12th July
P & O 124 for 5 (Mel Whitesides & Ralph Fawkes 2 wickets each) beat Walton Church 68 for 4 (G Hawkes 30no) by 56 runs, so ending our 3 match, 6 week, unbeaten run!
Thurs 21st July
The Man in the Stand becomes the Clergyman at the Crease (well, for 1 ball!)

Walton Church 91 for 9 (Ian Brown 40no, Geoff Bingley 22, Rod Corke, along with 3 others, a first ball 0!!) lost to Suffolk Coastal 94 for 2 by 8 wickets.

After a 30 year absence from the cricket field, Rod bravely ventured to the wicket, having impressed with the bat while practicing. The bowler bowled, the ball hit wood, but alas it was the wicket, not Rod's bat!
When it was time to field, Rod saw more action & stopped the runs building up more quickly, so that we lost with only 5 balls remaining.
Thurs 28th July
Walton Church 66 for 9 (a recovery from 36 for 7!) lost to Birketts Solicitors 68 for 6 (Mel Whitesides 3 wickets, Ted Payne 2) by 4 wickets with 8 balls remaining.
Thurs 4th Aug
Rugby Club 91 (Alex Sthanakiya 3 wickets) beat Walton Church 76 for 7 (Geoff Bingley 40no, Steve Turner 17) by 15 runs.
Wed 10th Aug
Walton Church 66 for 9 lost to Birketts Solicitors 68 for 6 (Mel Whitesides 3 wickets & 2 for Ted Payne) by 4 wickets .
Tuesday 16th Aug Walton Church 84 for 8 (Steve Turner 18) lost to Ipswich Borough Council 85 for 5 by 5 wickets
Thurs 18th Aug
And now the good news...our losing streak has come to an end!!
Fred Olsen 77 for 5 (Mel Whitesides & Jes Rennie 2 wickets each) TIED with Walton Church 77 for 5 (Andy Smethurst 48).
In a match closer than an Ashes encounter, which saw Ken 'Dickie' Dunn making his Walton Church CC playing debut, Trevor White was valiantly out on the last ball, attempting to score the winning run!!
Tues 23rd Aug
Walton Church 68 for 6 (Andy Smethurst 41no, Ralph Fawkes 2 wickets) beat P & O (including 4 Walton guest stars!) 62 for 6 (John Taylor 2 wickets) by 6 runs.
Our final match v Felixstowe Corinthians was rained off, so our final results tally was won 4, lost 7, & tied 1.

After 2 games, Ken 'Dickie' Dunn has announced his retirement from playing at the age of 75 years young, having not played for over 30 years! So it's back to umpiring next season, but thank you Ken for being such a great sport. No excuses for anyone not to play now, because if Ken can.....!!!!

As far as the 25 year celebration is concerned, we now hope to hold it before the start of next season

In the meantime the Leather on Willow book of cricket stories, to raise funds for the Galle Cricket Stadium, devastated by the Tsunami, is now available -
