St Mary’s
Cricket Club 2006
|
Another cricket season has come and gone - but what
were the highlights? Well we had quite an eventful time in various ways...
The Club celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2005, but didn’t get around
to celebrating it properly until 2006! (if you missed out here
are some pictures ) A bit like the start of our matches really - nearly always late, but we
get there in the end!!
Having finally reached the field of play, we welcomed
our second ever lady player. We have had a lot of fathers and sons playing for
us, but Jes Rennie instead has had his wife Kim and daughter Lizzie representing
the Club. Lizzie became our first ever lady batswoman, and can throw better than
some of the men!!
We also welcomed our first ever American player! Mike
Soskil, over for the wedding of his now brother in law Andrew Brown, had played
baseball and batted in a similar way (hit the ball, drop the bat & run!).
But what a fielder - diving around to stop the ball and bullet throw from the
outfield! And yes, the wedding 4 days later of Andrew & Jayne went well, and
Andrew managed to fit in a couple more games of cricket in before going off on
honeymoon!!
Then there is our regular umpire, Ken Dunn. Aged 76,
he umpires because he’s retired,. Except that he hasn’t! When we were one
short, it didn’t take too much persuasion for him to make a comeback! Don’t
be surprised if it happens again!
Other highlights included Sam Payne becoming only the
6th (and youngest) player to take a hat-trick, and to take more wickets than his
Dad Ted for the first time, while Silas Bingley with a 39, outscored his Dad
Geoff (37no) for the first time!
Did we win many matches? The answer is no (we won 3,
lost 10 & had another abandoned)! Was it a successful season? The answer
must be yes, because success for us is so much more than just winning or losing,
as the stories above hopefully illustrate. We had lots of fun, and most players
left each game having batted and/or bowled.
So, as we enter the season of mellow fruitfulness, the equipment is back in the shed and the whites are in the washing machine. Get past Christmas, and then we can start thinking about the new season again...
